Octagon Gable Vents

White octagon Spectis gable vent LOO19 with horizontal slats.

What an octagon vent is

An octagon gable vent is an eight-sided louver. It has the presence of a circle with flat sides that sit calmly against clapboard, shingles, or brick. The corners are part of the molding, not an afterthought, so the outline stays crisp after paint.

Like the other Spectis gable vents, it is molded high-density polyurethane, factory-primed white, and ready for paint. It does not rot, and it cuts and fastens much like wood trim.

Where it looks right

Victorian and Colonial Revival houses are the natural home for an octagon. The flat sides echo porch brackets, window heads, and the geometry already on those facades. It also works on a traditional gable that would look too plain with a rectangle and too soft with a circle.

Center it under the peak, with the flat top and bottom level. Do not rotate it into a diamond unless that is a different shape you meant to order. The octagon should read as a stop sign standing upright, not as a diamond with the corners cut.

Open or closed

open octagon gable vents pass air through the slats. closed octagon gable vents keep the eight-sided face and block the air path. Use the open version when the gable is part of the attic plan. Use the closed version for curb appeal on a wall that should not be opened, including a gable over a finished room.

A short sizing note

LOO19, a 19 inch octagon gable vent is the piece in the photo. Octagons are ordered by their overall width and height, which match on a regular octagon. The appearance guide on the sizing page, about one fifth to one quarter of the gable width, is a starting point for the look only. Check the drawing for the overall size before you mark the wall.

Pair it with

Pair an octagon with corner boards and a simple frieze, or with the same eight-sided window you already have on the porch. If the house is already full of arches, a round or an arch top will usually sit more quietly than an octagon. The install overview covers how an open piece laps the cut and how a closed piece mounts on the surface.
