How to Install a Gable Vent (Overview)

This is a short sequence, not the full instruction. Spectis gable vents are molded high-density polyurethane. They ship factory-primed white and are ready for exterior paint. The material does not rot, and it cuts and fastens much like wood trim. Closed vents mount on the wall. Open vents need an opening. An access door uses a different opening than a standard open vent.

  1. Plan the spot. Find the center of the gable, and check for studs, wiring, and anything else in the wall before you mark.
  2. For an open vent, hold the piece where it will live, level it, and trace it. Cut the opening smaller than that outline so the frame laps the cut on every side. A closed vent does not get a hole.
  3. Frame the opening so the edges are supported and the fasteners have solid material to bite. Flash or wrap the cut the way you would any wall penetration, following your builder and local practice.
  4. Set the vent with PLP100 urethane adhesive on the back, plus plated fasteners through the frame into the wall. Adhesive and fasteners are separate from the vent.
  5. Seal the joint where the vent meets the siding, and flash the top edge so water sheds over the frame instead of behind it.
  6. Fill the fastener holes.
  7. Paint. The vent arrives primed, not finish-coated, except LOAD access doors, which come painted white. See painting factory-primed Spectis millwork.

Safety. Gable work means ladders or scaffolding. Stay off a wet roof, and hire a pro for a high gable. This overview is not a substitute for someone who can see the wall.
